You are Invited to Participate in the 4th Annual Young Composers Competition:
Premiere your choral composition with Chorus Austin’s award-winning Chamber Ensemble as part of the “Southwest Voices” concerts Saturday, May 20, 2017, and Sunday, May 21, 2017, in Austin, Texas.
Composer must be 30 years of age or younger by December 31, 2016.
– From 2 to 5 minutes in duration
– Any combination of SATB voicing up to SSAATTBB
– Work may be either a cappella or with piano accompaniment
– All compositions must include piano reduction
– Up to three (3) entries are welcome
Compositions will be judged by Chorus Austin Artistic Director and Conductor Ryan Heller with input from Chamber Ensemble singers. Selection criteria will include, but is not limited to: voice leading, harmonic language, piano accompaniment (as appropriate), setting of text and general understanding of the choral idiom. All compositions will be judged blind.
All compositions must be postmarked by February 1, 2017. Submit three (3) copies of each composition without identifying information plus a cover letter with composer’s name, address, phone number(s), email address, date of birth and current occupation or place where student. All compositions are to be submitted WITHOUT the composer’s name on the body of the composition. Submissions will not be returned unless a self-addressed stamped envelope is included.

Competition winner will be notified by April 1, 2017. Winner will have the opportunity to work with Ryan Heller and Chorus Austin’s Chamber Ensemble at select rehearsals before the concerts and be acknowledged during the performances. (Any accommodations/travel are the winner’s responsibility.) Winner will receive a $1,200 cash prize, two (2) tickets to the performance and a professional recording of the concert.

About “Southwest Voices”
An audience favorite, Chorus Austin presents “Southwest Voices” featuring its select 32-voice Chamber Ensemble. This concert celebrates composers from Austin, from Texas and through the Southwest as well as composers from within the Chorus Austin family. A highlight of the concerts is the premiere of the work chosen as winner of this season’s Young Composers Competition.
