Auditions for the 2016-2017 season
Mid-season auditions will be held January 2nd, 2017 at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Please schedule an audition by sending an email to email@example.com. You will be contacted soon to schedule your audition. These auditions at Covenant Presbyterian are ONLY for the Symphonic Chorus and Chamber Ensemble. If you are interested in the Youth Chorus auditions, please contact the YC Director Miss Diana Hopkins at Diana.Hopkins@ChorusAustin.org
The ensembles of Chorus Austin perform great music for the community because of the more than 150 members in Symphonic Chorus and Chamber Ensemble who volunteer their time and talents. We are always looking for a few good singers to audition for our groups.
Each ensemble requires a specific set of vocal skills, and each group performs a specific style of music. Singers for each ensemble must be at least 19 years old and/or a high school graduate or equivalent. Membership in Chorus Austin ensembles is by audition only. Our Chamber Ensemble is a limited number of singers ensemble and not all voice parts may be open at this time.
Auditions are conducted by the Chorus Austin Artistic Director Ryan Heller. Each audition lasts about 10 minutes and includes three parts:
- Vocalization and Tonal Memory
You will be led through vocal warm ups to test your high and low ranges. You also will then be tested on tonal memory: a series of intervals will be played and you will be asked to sing them back. Each test will get longer and more difficult.
- Sight Reading and Harmonization
The difficulty of the exercise will be dependent upon your performance and tonal memory sections. You will be given opportunity to study the selection for a moment and then will be asked to sing the exercise. You may use solfege, numbers, or any syllable that works for you. All candidates are required to try the sight reading, regardless of experience, for music-reading assessment.
- Performance Piece
An art song, or aria that you know. Your performance piece does not have to be memorized, but sheet music is required for the accompanist. You may also sing your performance piece a cappella. The piece must be of a classical nature. NO POP SONGS are accepted for an audition. If you have questions regarding your piece, please do not hesitate to ask.
Formal auditions are held twice a year: in August and January. Auditions at other times may be arranged if space is available and the Artistic Director approves. To schedule an audition or for more information email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
